Did you know water is essential for good skin health? Yes that’s right! For some water may not be the most desirable beverage, but what I can say is that drinking at least 6-8 glasses of water a day will definitely benefit you on numerous levels. How, you ask? Well for starters, ideally our bodies should be composed of 45-70% water depending on our physical build and gender, and without the adequate intake of water we cannot function efficiently. Your body uses water in all its cells, organs, and tissues to help regulate its temperature and maintain other bodily functions. But for right now let’s stick to “skin”. Our skin is an organ and made up of cells, and like any other cell in the body, they are made up of water. Without water, our skin organ will not function properly or at it's best.

If your skin is not getting the sufficient amount of water it needs, the lack of hydration will present itself on the surface in different forms, and may not be absorbing or benefiting from topical skincare products due to the following ailments:

Dry tight and flaky skin- Dry skin has less resilience and is more prone to wrinkling, and flaking.

Oily Skin- For some dehydrated skin may produce more oil because it is compensating for a lack of moisture.

Clogged pores- When skin is dry, the cells do not regenerate properly and begin to build up waste and clog pores, when not attended to properly inflamed pimples form.

Keratosis Pilaris aka Chicken Skin- When skin is dehydrated and cannot regenerate properly, a buildup of keratin (a hair protein) in the pores will occur. As a result, a small bump forms over where a hair should be.

Dark Eye Circles- When your body is not receiving the proper amount of water, the skin beneath your eyes begins to look dull and your eyes look sunken. This is due to their close proximity to the underlying bone.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR YOUR SKIN IMPROVE?

It won’t happen over night, but within 2-4 weeks of proper water intake you will begin to see results as the body begins to function properly. Trust me, drinking an adequate amount of water used to feel like a chore, now it feels normal and is apart of my daily routine, not to mention the results are visible. Who doesn't want fresh, toned, hydrated skin?!
